4th Grade Literacy

"The more you read the more things you know. The more that you learn the more places you'll go."  -Dr. Seuss

Literacy at Oakhurst contains three subjects - reading, writing, and word study (which includes both vocabulary and spelling components).

Students have a two hour literacy block where these three subjects are taught in a balanced, connected way so what students learn in one area can readily be used in another.

Growth in literacy requires hard work both at school and at home.

Students are expected to read at home each day.

Students are given the opportunity to check out books both from their classroom library and the school media center. We understand that families can lead very busy lives, but reading is an essential life skill and finding any time to read, no matter how long or short, will help students succeed.

Currently we are learning...

  • Vocabulary - new each week! Tests are on Friday and go home in Thursday folders.

  • Reading - Students are in Unit 4 - all about poetry and fiction. This unit is BIG on interpretation because it's our 2nd fiction unit of the year. Students will dive deeper into concepts like the theme of a text and tracking character changes and interactions throughout a text. We'll also be studying the structure and elements of poetry as we consider the author's purpose and themes in a poem.

  • Writing - In Unit 4, students will have 3 larger writing assignments. Students will write 3 (or more!) poems at the start of the unit. Later, students will write one essay about the theme of a shared class text. Finally, students will use what they practiced together to write their own literary essay comparing the themes of two different texts that they choose.
